1.9 million households have a high-speed fibre optic internet connection for their modern digital communication. The total volume of data transmitted over fixed broadband internet in Germany was expected to reach 102 billion gigabytes in 2021 – an increase of 34.2 per cent compared with the previous year.

Even so, with a fibre optic share of around 5.4 per cent, Germany ranks 34th in the 2020 OECD country ranking. South Korea, Japan and Lithuania take the top three places. The need to expand fibre optic networks is recognised in Germany too, in order to stay competitive in digital communication worldwide.
